It’s been a long time coming but finally the construction of our studio is underway.  Here are some pics of excavation for the foundation.  There have been multiple design changes to the footprint of the structure.  The original plan posted here several months ago have been abandoned b ecause of budget and accessibly issues because of the creek.

Hello all Photo Element Fans and supporters!

We have begun the design phase of our Dream Studio. It is, of course, taking longer than we had hoped but we love our architect, Adam Hillhouse of Hillhouse Architects .

Here is a taste of what’s to come. It will give you an idea of the scale of things.

READ FIRST BEFORE YOU WATCH THE VIDEO
Bali New Year was quite the sight to see. As we showed you in our last video, the pre-new year cleansing ceremony, the Balinese do not skimp on the production of their celebrations. Their equivalent New Year’s Eve is one hell of a night! For 2 weeks prior to the big night each neighborhood spends day and night building and creating artistic masterpieces of diabolical demons. Each one constructed with the finest detail down to their private bits. They parade them around town in mock duels carried by 20 to 50 men at a time. Songs, Music, Chants, Fireworks and alot of Laughing is heard as the procession goes on through the night until in the wee hours then they are burned to ashes. All of this is done to chase all of the bad spirits out of the villages and towns. The day following, The New Year, all of Bali is quiet. Not a single person is to be seen. No cars, no motorbikes, no planes (airport shuts down), No one goes outside, uses electricity, cooks or makes a disturbance of any kind. The reason is if any of the demons try to come back to town… it thinks that everyone has gone and he himself would leave too. We cheated a bit and used electricity and cooked some dinner. Check out our video below and try not to get too scared.

From Ubud we traveled north and east to the coastal town of Amed. The coral reef is just a few meter swim from the black pebble beach shore. Our hotel room looked over the beach and we couldn’t help catch a few photos of the early morning light. Our friend Nengah’s home village of Amed was having a pre-new year cleansing ceremony called Melasti (spelled incorrectly in slideshow) that he was participating in and invited Julie and I to tag-a-long and observe. Wow! What a wonderful experience. Although a very serious ritual, like everything, the Balinese approach everything with a light heart and a smile. The next day we took a boat ride to go snorkeling at a Japanese ship wreck teaming with colorful life of fish and coral. I wish we had an underwater camera and at least the USB cord to download the boat picks from our small point and shoot camera…oops. Enjoy!
